War bulletins: Repeat of attacks on Hawaii
and American shipping off San Francisco. Flash
just received says Japanese are now bombing
British naval bases. Probably heavy loss of
life in Hawaii, including 350 at Hickam Field.
Civilians were hit by enemy strafing. Unconfirmed
reports are that the planes came from two
enemy aircraft carriers. Manila bulletin may
have been in error, but the area is under
censorship. Repeat of KGB report earlier in
the day. A high school in the city was converted
into a hospital to care for the wounded. |
3:39: Special broadcast from Manila (7:03
a.m. in Manila): Bert Silan confirms that
the bombing of Manila was erroneously reported.
Security update. Some form of martial law
will be declared. Repeat that Japanese announces
state of war with U.S. and Great Britain.
No messages in code may be sent from the Philippines.
Honolulu was the last place people expected
to be attacked. Attack was likely to prevent
U.S. from interfering with a Japanese invasion
of Thailand. MacArthur refused to make any
statement so early in the day.
8:35: Program: NBC joins the program
already in progress. The Gordon String Quartet
plays from Town Hall in New York City.
12:19 (6:12 p.m. EST) Program interruption:
H.R. Baukhage from Washington: Press Secretary
Steve Early said that an unidentified squadron
of airplanes was sighted over Guam. Governor
Poindexter then confirmed that the damage
in Hawaii has been great. Perhaps there has
been no raid in Manila. The Secretary of State
issued a statement earlier.
16:08: program resumes with music in
progress. There are no further interruptions. |
