Stereoptic viewers were extremely popular during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Nearly duplicate images are printed "in stereo" on cards (called stereviews or stereoptics). These card are then slid into the holder on the stereoviewer. When the user looks into the lenses, he sees a single image that's supposed to give the illusion of depth, though the effects are not as profound as modern 3-D techniques.
