DVD0171: Early Films: 1904-1922: These 42 short silent films (MPEG format) represent early American uses of motion picture, and provide a unique insight into American life. By 1904 film technology allowed for the making of longer films, from about 3 minutes in length up to 18 minutes. Non-fiction subjects focused on major events, such as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. Non-fiction films experimented with more complicated plots, and even with stop-action animation. CD0312: New Deal and FDR Cartoons: This CD contains 2,343 political cartoons on The New Deal and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Each cartoon has been sized and embedded in its own web page. A master list of all the cartoons, organized by date, links directly to those web pages. Everything is self-contained on the CD, no internet connection is needed. This CD provides a unique look into the media's reaction to the incredible changes brought about by Roosevelt and The New Deal. Additionally, the spectre of Fascism appears early as a theme and runs throughout the collection. 4. The Negro Soldier (1943): WWII recruitment film aimed at African Americans. The film opens with an African American minister in church telling his flock why they should join the armed forces to fight the Nazis. We see historical re-enactments of African Americans as valued participants in US armed conflicts dating from the American Revolution. The balance of the film deals with the African American experience within the present war effort, the conditions of their living and training, with special attention paid to the respect and dignity they will have.
