The history of stereotyping of Asians
in American popular culture is lengthy and
complicated. The first group to receive
significant stereotyping were the Chinese,
who came in large numbers to work on the
country's railroads. By the early 20th Century
the Fu Manchu caricature was a fixture in
mass culture. The Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor initiated a period of intense stereotyping
of America's Pacific enemy. After WWII,
it was the North Koreans who were the subject
of extreme caricaturing, especially in comic
books. Many of these stereotypes linger
today. Essays on these topics are planned
for the future. |
