African American Stereotypes:
Engraving, Prints, & Cartoons
|
| This section of the Authentic History
Center's "Teaching Diversity With Multimedia"
collection focuses on stereotypes of people of African
descent from the end of the American Civil War in 1865
through the end of the 19th Century, as depicted in
engravings, prints, and cartoons. Many of the engravings
romanticized the Old South way of life by showing happy,
contented slaves. These images would become prevalent
in the early days of filmmaking as well. Other images
in this section show the derogatory way that Blacks
were caricatured as coons and pickaninnies in early
newspaper cartoons and comic strips. |
