Audio Interviews With African American Former Slaves

Beginning in the late 1930s, the American government took an interest in preserving the stories of the aging population of African American former slaves. Thousands of interviews were conducted as part of the Federal Writers Project, and the transcripts of those interviews are available to the public. In later years, some interviews were conducted in which the audio was recorded. Some of these recordings are included below. Additionally, they are available on compact disc (CD0100) in the donations section.
