Here is a recording of two of the greatest baseball teams of the 30s playing each other. The background noises of the teletype ticker, typewriters of the sports writers, and crowd noises add to the atmosphere of the recording.

[The complete game is available in the Donations section]

This was broadcast over WWJ in Detroit on September 20, 1934 and is considered to be the oldest surviving "complete" game broadcast. The announcer is Ty Tyson (who actually doubled during the game as stadium P.A. announcer) and the entire broadcast was sponsored by the White Star Refining Company (Mobil Oil). It originates from the old Navin Field in Detroit (later called Briggs, then Tiger Stadium). This was the first of two back to back years the Tigers won the A.L. pennant. In '34 they lost in the World Series to St. Louis but the following year they prevailed over the Chicago Cubs and were baseball's World Champs. This Yankee team with a few additions (noteably the addition of rookie Joe DiMaggio) took the A.L. pennant in '36 after the Tigers' 2 year run.
